Twitter is Failing

Twitter is Failing
By: jamesbaxley

The social justice warriors are at it again, trying to pressure Twitter into suspending Donald Trump’s Twitter account.

A poll taken in December from Quinnipiac University reveals that 59 per cent of respondents said Trump “should shut down his personal Twitter account.” In addition to the poll, an online petition calling for Twitter to suspend Trump’s account has reached more than 46,000 signatures.

Speaking at the Code Commerce conference in California, in December, Twitter’s chief executive, Jack Dorsey described his feelings about the U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s use of the social media service as “complicated.”

Dorsey went as far to say, “And having the president-elect on our service, using it as a direct line of communication, allows everyone to see what’s on his mind in the moment. I think that’s interesting. I think it’s fascinating.”

I think eventually the Left and the Progressives will pressure Twitter to suspend Trump’s account. Why not. They've been suspending Conservative and right-wing bloggers accounts more than any other group.

Conservative blogger Robert Stacy McCain says” You can’t even state FACTS about these people on Twitter without being accused of “harassment. Facts are harassment and truth is hate.” Not only has McCain been suspended from Twitter, actor Adam Baldwin; Conservative pundit Milo Yiannopoulos; Conservative Writer Kassy Dillon; USA Today columnist and law professor Glenn Reynolds; and the list goes on.

But to ban Trump from Twitter would be in violation of the first amendment. Yes, Twitter is a private company and can make, or even change their rules on a whim, but.

Twitter has become the world’s primary place for political dialogue, if they ban Trump, then what would stop Twitter from banning activists and dissidents across the globe? Twitter has a duty to recognize how its actions would affect the larger world.

“The problem is not necessarily in what he’s saying but that he’s the president saying it,” said Jillian York, a free speech advocate at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The suspension of the president-elect’s account for the messages he has posted would look suspiciously partisan.

Twitter is already making themselves look partisan. The Breitbart editor and conservative pundit Milo Yiannopoulos has been banned from Twitter for “allegedly” being an internet “troll.” Twitter has also been banning alt-right accounts left and right.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, also known as Da'esh, uses Twitter (along with Facebook, etc.) to spread its message across the globe and recruit thousands to its cause. ISIS is estimated to have over 46,000 accounts on Twitter alone.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Director James Comey described ISIS's Twitter strategy as using Twitter too broadcast their message. Then ISIS will move potential recruits “to Twitter Direct Messaging” ISIS then moves them to an “encrypted mobile-messaging app, so they go dark to us.”

And the most telling of Twitter’s partisan politics is the assassination threats on Trump, yet these accounts are still active.

February 25, New York Times columnist Ross Douthat posted a disparaging tweet in which the columnist suggested to assassinate Trump. His account is still active.

Twitter thinks that it can change its rules at it goes. And it can because it’s a private company, but don’t get too cocky guys.

Remember that bakery in Oregon that refused to bake a cake for a lesbian couple? It was a private company just like Twitter. They were shut down.

Maybe this will make you sit up and pay attention. Remember Memories Pizza, the Indiana pizza shop that closed after its owner said it wouldn’t cater a gay wedding? They were a private company also.
